Moderate Sedation Providers

  • Ancillary equipment required by California law: Oral airways, a laryngeal mask airway (we recommend I-gels for moderate sedation providers), positive pressure device such as a bag valve mask, cricothyroid device. Since many of these items have expiration dates, we suggest you save expired items for practice. You can purchase these items from various vendors, and CDSA is working with Rose Dodson at Sedation Resource for our supplies.
  • Airway Model Laerdal 252500: This model shows the anatomical structures of the airway and allows you to visualize the Sellick maneuver and cricothyroid location. You can use this model to see where oral airway adjuncts should be placed. You can purchase this online from Laerdal or various distributors for about $221.50.
  • Bag Valve Mask Practice: You will need to either practice on yourself and staff or have a manikin to practice bag valve mask ventilation. If you practice on yourself and staff, you will need to properly disinfect the equipment between participants or have a separate mask and bacterial filter for each person. You can purchase a separate mask and filter for about $6 from anesthesia equipment suppliers. Manikin and task trainer choices are discussed on the next page.
  • Optional: If you want to practice placing airway adjuncts, you will need to either attend the course or purchase an airway manikin. Manikin and task trainer choices are discussed on the CDSA Website.

General Anesthesia Providers

*If you attend the CDSA Hands-on Airway Course in person, all supplies will be provided, and you will be able to evaluate various manikins and task trainers under the supervision of our faculty.

MANIKINS AND TASK TRAINERS USED FOR ADULT AIRWAY PRACTICE

This document was prepared by CDSA Program Chairman Robert L. Merin DDS and reviewed and approved by the CDSA Program Committee Members: Gary Chan DDS, Dan Hilton DDS, Rich Robert DDS, David Rothman DDS, Bruce Whitcher DDS, and Technical Advisor Rick Ritt EMT. December 2022

Laerdal Airway Model 252500–$221.50 from Laerdal

This hand-held teaching tool helps explain the anatomy of the airway and show how some medical devices interact with the airway in a visual manner. It allows for learners to familiarize themselves with the anatomy of adult airways in a more hands-on manner. This model can demonstrate Sellick Maneuver and cricothyroid placement. Cost about $222 from Laerdal or distributors.

New Laerdal Little Anne QCPR– Approximate Cost $277

Little Anne® QCPR Training Manikin with Soft Pack/Training Mat by Laerdal. Laerdal now offers the next generation of their Little Anne manikin, the Little Anne QCPR. The latest Little Anne includes QCPR measurement and feedback technology for CPR.

  • Natural obstruction of the airway allows students to learn the important technique of opening the airway
  • Head tilt/chin lift and jaw thrust allow students to correctly practice all maneuvers necessary when resuscitating a real victim
  • Realistic airway function means that the airway remains obstructed without proper head tilt/chin lift or jaw thrust. Chest rise is seen with correct ventilations
  • Anatomically correct landmarks and sternal notch allow the student to practice identification of all anatomical landmarks relevant to adult CPR.

PROS: Very good for practicing bag valve mask ventilation and airway opening maneuvers. Also excellent for CPR practice with phone app feedback. Lightweight and durable.

CONS: Cannot be used with any airway adjuncts (oral airway, LMA, nasal, etc.).

Used Little Anne– Cost is Variable

PROS: Older manikins in good condition work well for practicing bag valve mask ventilation, and cost savings can be significant. Replacement parts are usually available. Manikins made after February 1999 can be upgraded to QCPR with $80 upgrade kit.

CONS: Caveat Emptor on anything bought used. Because Little Anne is very durable, many of the used manikins available for sale are made before 1999 and cannot be upgraded, but they are still useful for bag valve mask ventilation and CPR practice.

Prestan Professional Adult Jaw Thrust Manikin–$172

The PRESTAN Professional Jaw Thrust Head gives instructors the option to teach with the jaw thrust maneuver or head-tilt/chin-lift allowing the student to grasp the manikin’s lower jaw and lift with both hands displacing the jaw of the manikin forward and upward.

PROS: Less expensive than the Laerdal Little Anne.

CONS: Neck movements are less natural and more like sliding on a mechanical tract. Manikin is not as sturdy as the Laerdal Little Anne. Cannot be used with airway adjuncts.

Amazon Airway Manikins. Aohuada Brand & Other Brands ~$231

This type of manikin can be purchased from various sellers on Amazon and can be used to practice with oral airways, LMA, nasal pharyngeal airways, and intubation.

PROS: Good for practicing oral airways, I-gel (#3), nasal pharyngeal airway (size 28 or smaller), intubation, and fair for bag valve mask ventilation. Very inexpensive compared to other airway manikins. Combined with a Little Anne and Airway Model, it will allow you to practice all the airway adjuncts.

CONS: It is only fair for bag valve mask ventilation. You cannot practice the Sellick maneuver, visualize cricothyroid location, and cannot perform chest compressions. Replacement parts may be difficult to get, but with the low purchase price, this may not be a factor.

Laerdal Airway Management Trainer with Airway Demonstration Model– $2466

For practicing a variety of intubation, ventilation, and suction techniques.

PROS: Can practice almost all airway maneuvers. Very durable and parts are readily available.

CONS: Expensive. Bag valve mask does not require face seal to inflate the lungs and you cannot perform chest compressions with this manikin.

Armstrong Adult Intubation Manikin Product No: AA-3000– $1,170

Head extends for correct positioning, the lungs have a realistic compliance, and the skin is soft. Practice bag valve mask ventilations, oral or nasal intubation, EOA, Combitube, and other airway management techniques.

PROS & CONS: This product was not tested by a CDSA reviewer. Looks similar to the Nasco product.

Nasco Airway Larry with Lungs, Board & Case Including shipping–$1534

“Airway Larry” Airway Management Trainer simulates a non-anesthetized patient and is ideal for practicing intubation, ventilation, suction and CPR techniques.

PROS: This product was not tested by a CDSA reviewer.

CONS: This product is deceptively expensive because all the parts are bought separately, and the price listed above includes the head, lungs, mounting board, and case. Shipping time is 4-8 weeks.
